Inconsistent phonological disorder and its treatment through speech therapy

Children with inconsistent phonological disorder suffer from irregular productions of the same words. Approximately 10 per cent of the children with speech sound issues experience inconsistent phonological disorder. But there is nothing to worry. Inconsistent phonological disorder can be cured with speech therapy.

Causes and symptoms of inconsistent phonological disorder (IPD)

The main cause of IPD is unknown. A family history of speech and language disorder, hearing loss and neurological disorders can be the risk factors for a child to develop inconsistent phonological disorder.

Inconsistent phonological disorder occurs when the child struggles to understand conversation and repeat the same words. Children with IPD need speech therapy to teach them pronounce words.

Parents also need to understand the other symptoms of inconsistent phonological disorder in children. Some of the early signs are:

  • Difficulty in understanding conversation.
  • Your child is unable to make phonetic sounds. By the age of 6, children make phonetic sounds. However, if your child is not uttering a single word, he needs speech therapy.
  • Mixing up the phonetic sounds when pronouncing certain words. For instance, they may mix ‘b’ with‘d’ or vice versa.
  • Children with IPD find it difficult to say complex words.
  • Missing letters and syllables in words.

If your child is showing any speech disorder symptoms, seek speech therapy in Kolkata under the guidance of experienced audiologists.

Treatment of inconsistent phonological disorder (IPD) through speech therapy

Children with IPD can be treated with speech therapy. Speech-language pathologists will examine your child’s phonemic perception abilities and make a proper treatment plan for their phonemic development.

Speech-language pathologists may conduct a one-to-one session or in a small group. Since children with IPD struggle with reading and repeating words, therapists will focus on pre-literary skills and letter knowledge to the child.

Inconsistent phonological disorder is curable, but only if diagnosed in the initial stage. As parents, whenever you notice any kind of speech disorder for a long period, it is advised to consult with your speech language pathologists without delay.
